Signaled

I've never understood the term 'virtue signaling'.  Yeah, I know it's a derogatory term for someone who goes out of their way to appear to support some pop-culture cause du jour.  My issue is that it's not really virtuous. 

Like expending far more on efficiency than they'd ever save just to appear that they support energy efficiency.  That's not virtuous.  That's wasteful and deceitful. 

Critically, it's a misnomer.  It implies that the criticism is that they're bragging about being virtuous.  Though that's ironic, by itself, it's not accurate.  

Even if their intentions are good, it doesn't signal virtue.  If you haven't done the due diligence to find out you're doing the opposite of what you want to appear as though you're doing, you're not exhibiting virtue.  At best, it signals stupidity.
