Growing Distance
With all the innovations over the last few centuries, it's indisputable that surviving is objectively easier, today, than ever. It's physically easier; calories are easier than ever to obtain. It's mentally easier; the hard problems have already been worked out. There's no need to worry about anything other than what you want to worry about.
Quality of life is a more subjective metric. Because things are easier, a higher standard starts to be required. Failure to meet the new standard invites anxiety.
Bridging the disconnect between needs and wants ain't easy. Better things are always coming into existence. As they do, the further the distance seems to grow between what's really needed and what feels needed.
