Modal runs imply mood.  They're like someone who doesn't want to come right out and tell you how they feel.  Pentatonic runs cut through it with a violent honesty.

Don't misunderstand; the mystical magic of modes really helps set things up.  Closer intervals let you know where things are going.  Once it's time to get down to business, though, the blunt action of pentatonics get things to the dirty, gritty reality.
