Folks like to talk about the stuff they like.  They also like to hear others talk about the stuff they like.  Popularity of certain subjects becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy. 

Usually, the only people who hear new things are people who like to hear new things.  Everybody else just listens to news about stuff they like.  From time to time, they even get upset if they have to hear new things.
