Candy on the Shelf
Halloween candies on a store shelf smell like plastic costumes and a long time ago. Dark streets and the painfully short ecstasy of sweets and scary seem, now, to have been preparation for certain times in life. Back when the scariest things a kid's mind could imagine were Reagan's head spinning in the Exorcist, Nosferatu's teeth from Salem's Lot, and the two blinking LEDs in the window of the house on Amityville Horror, no kid could imagine how terrible the world really could get.
Having a little sweetness to take away the bad is always good. Finding that sweetness requires knocking on doors. Sometimes you have to wear a costume.
