Stone Rolls no More?
There's a rumor Rolling Stone magazine will publish its last print edition this summer. Fifty-five years of mostly music news, and some other interesting articles might come to an end. To me, that'd be a loss.
I know, I know... Rolling Stone is a big-government shill rag with a pop culture facade... but it hasn't always been that way. It used to be against the 'man'. No matter what letter he had beside his name, no matter what race or creed, if he was an authoritarian tyrant, he was bad.
I've had a subscription for the last 30 years. In those years, it's gone from publishing every other week to every other month, with the 'double-issue' they published, just a few months ago. They're back to once a month, now, but with a very thin and small pamphlet, compared to what it once was.
When I first started taking Rolling Stone, it was almost poster-sized. You could pull out pictures and frame them, if you so desired. I never did, but you could've.
The magazine already published a good bit of propaganda, back then. There were still outlaws, though... Saying whatever they wanted... and telling the truth. When the likes of Hunter S. Thompson and P. J. O'Rourke moved on, it pretty much wrapped that kind of thing up.
Lately, I've seriously contemplated cancelling. The thin veil previously disguising propaganda has been ripped off. Writing quality suffered greatly, as well; to say it's atrocious would be a compliment. If the rumor is true, I guess I'll just let my subscription run on out. Like the ex-girlfriend who went off the rails, I'll somberly watch it slip into oblivion.
